Cat Diarrhea and Its Treatment

Diarrhea is quite common in cats. It can be caused due to various factors like change in diet, side effects of medication, intestinal parasites, digestive disorders etc. The symptoms in diarrhea is running stool and it can lead to the cat becoming dehydrated and weak. If the cat has mild diarrhea which lasts for 24-48 hours, then homemade remedies can suffice. However, if it continues for more than 2 days and the cat is vomiting, becomes lethargic and severely dehydrated, then a veterinarian should be consulted immediately. Some of the most common treatment options for cat diarrhea are provided below:

Change Cat Food

Cats suffering from diarrhea should be fed adequately and their diet should not be withheld. The diet should be simple and they should be given core and nutritious cat food. If the cat’s diet was changed recently before diarrhea then the pet owners should revert back to the old diet and check if the diarrhea stops. If the same food is being given as earlier, it may happen that a new batch of packaged food may also have caused the diarrhea. In such case, a new batch of food should be given by replacing the current batch. They can also be given low-antigen diet for providing relief.
